Each week, former sf.myopenbar.com editor Allie Pape brings you her picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF. This week: gentrification, unemployment, and Twitter. Have an event coming up? Want to share a tip? E-mail her.
1. Secession Art & Design Anniversary: Two years in business is a remarkable achievement for an art gallery, and that goes double in these times. Swing by the Mission and congratulate Secession, enjoy a free drink, and watch artists Nate1 and Ursula Xanthe Young do live painting. Have some spare change rattling around? All the gallery's art will be 20% off. (Friday, September 25, 5 pm, at Secession Art & Design, 3361 Mission St., Mission.)
2. Elance Party for the Unemployed: Having been unemployed for the better part of a year (present typing excepted), LTB has seen it all when it comes to the current crop of "freelance" sites trawling for broke writers, designers, and Web developers. Mostly, what there is to see is a lot of people (usually from the developing world) who are willing to work for pennies, so we're skeptical that this presentation by Elance, one of the top sites, is going to be a great destination for those looking for a way to pay the bills. But they're giving away booze, and if you're a fellow victim, it's one heck of an opportunity to drink too much and make some unfriendly comments during question time. RSVP here. (Tuesday, September 29, 6-7:30 pm, at Varnish Gallery, 77 Natoma St., SOMA.)
3. Showdogs on Twitter: Showdogs, the upscale hot dog and sausage place from the Foreign Cinema folks, is already making waves thanks to its creative franks and trendsetting location (opening an upscale restaurant in the heart of Upper Market would test even Lassie's courage). Best in show, however, has to go to their inventive Twitter feed, where a daily task (naming a presidential pooch, doing a monkey impersonation, or showing a MUNI transfer) usually nets customers a free 8 oz. beer with purchase. Follow them to keep tabs on the task required for that day's free brew. (Daily via Twitter, at Showdogs, 1020 Market St., Civic Center.)
4. Happy Bucking Friday: Another dispatch from the Upper Market Files: Buck Tavern, an unassuming local pub with a deer-antler theme, is offering that rarest of kills in the happy-hour hunt, all-night deals on a Friday. From 5 pm until closing, cocktails are $4, domestic drafts are $3, and sliders (beef and turkey) are $2. As if that wasn't enough, Saturday is free pool, and domestic drafts are again $3. Buck yeah. (Fridays from 5 pm to close and Saturdays from 8 pm to close, at Buck Tavern, 1655 Market St., Civic Center.)
