On Saturday November 4th, The Midway Creative Complex in Dogpatch will host Luminary (Expanded), an interactive exhibition with mixed media from local and international artists. The event is a result of a thoughtful collaboration between The Midway and Future Fires, an online art platform that showcases and connects artists from around the world. "After the success of the Luminary event we hosted last March, we decided to double the exhibition; inviting new artists that are notable for creating projects on the border between technology and art," said Clark Supryrowicz, founder of Future Fires.
Created as an engaging journey, viewers will be a part of each performance and directly impacted by the art. Guests will travel through the exhibitions, surrounded by world-class visual and performing artists, explosions of color and light created by percussionists, and sculptures that bloom and shape-shift. All the while, wearable tech couture will track and respond to viewers' gazes.
Walking through the space you'll see Behnaz Farahi's newest tech fashion with rare embedded sight-reactive technology. The main gallery space will be transformed into a living organism by Montreal-based artist Mathieu Le Sourd (Maotik) through a motion-reactive piece called "Flow." Based on tides, viewers will be surrounded by an artificial ocean of sorts, swathed in color, light and sound.
The splashy Color Factory artist Tom Stayte will also be there with his #selfie installation. His notable project will again inspire viewers to consider how online image sharing has changed the role of photography in the digital age. Local artist Meryl Pataky will be showing her neon artworks, and the Oakland based Moshi Project will present motion-capture digital arts with Mikey Disco, San Francisco-based hip-hop dancer, performing in conjunction.
Also notable is an installation by Turkish artist Osman Koc. A gigantic cone, hanging 15 feet high, 10 feet in diameter is covered with reflective mylar. The experience will be like standing in a shower of lights where the illumination intensity and shapes vary moment-to-moment. "A single, powerful projector is directed upward to the cone. This transforms the projected imagery into a plane of light, blanketing the entire space," said Koc.
