Once a year, crafters, tinkerers, hackers, musicians, amateur scientists, robot makers, gardeners, steampunk fans, and everyone in between take over the San Mateo County Expo Center for MAKE Magazine's annual Maker Faire, a celebration of all things DIY. This year's Faire takes place this weekend, May 30 & 31. Inspired by President Obama's call to action—begin again the work of remaking America—the 2009 theme is "Re-Make America."
Returning favorites this year include the life-sized mousetrap, EepyBird's sticky Diet Coke & Mentos fountain show, McPuzo & Trotsky, and Lightning Lab's giant twin tesla coils. From giant sculptures made out of recycled anything and steampunk bands to pyrotechnics and hands-on art, craft and science projects, there's literally something for everyone.
Bicycle enthusiasts should consider joining Fossil Fool and the Rock the Bike crew in Dolores Park at 8:30a Saturday morning for a leisurely, flat, 19-mile group ride from the city to San Mateo with Paul and his pedal-powered sound system. Or if the start time is too early for Saturday morning, take your bike on Caltrain, get off at Hayward Park or Hillsdale, and ride over to the Expo Center. Maker Faire will offer $15 adult tickets to anyone who arrives on bike, and valet bike parking capacity has been increased to 2000 (!) from last year's max of 300. Whether you train, bike, or drive, make sure you head over to Fossil Fool's pedal-powered stage and pedal to help keep the sound system going.
Tickets are available on-site or from one of 75 Bay Area locations. The Faire runs Saturday from 10a - 8p and Sunday from 10a - 6p. Day passes are $25 for adults, $15 for students (ages 13 - 20), $10 for kids (ages 4 - 12), and free for kids under 3.
