We've already jumped on the minerals, acai berry, ojon nuts and mega mushroom bandwagons. Does Morocco's argan oil live up to all it's hype?
Popularly known as the brand MoroccanOil used in hair treatments at select salons and quite hard to find on retail shelves, argan oil is quickly absorbed promoting the healing of acne and severe dry skin, in addition to making your hair shine instantly without feeling greasy.
Argan oil is derived from the argan tree in the Essaouira region of Morocco (studded with luxurious riads and beachside resorts like the Sofitel). Outside the isolated destination local Berber women of argan cooperatives are producing the oil. The argan nuts are ground by hand and pressed to extract it's pure oil form. The sought after miracle oil then finds it's way to salons and spas near you with a hefty price tag tacked on.
You can find a number of beauty products using argan oil, but it's most important to find those promoting fair trade. Try Kiehl's Superbly Restorative line, which uses fairly-traded argan oil. You can also support the environment by purchasing Kiehl's Argan Body Lotion with limited-edition labels designed by Adrian Grenier, Kelly Slater, Parsons The New School for Design and Erykah Badu.
Josie Maran also has a beauty line, formulated with 100% pure organically grown Moroccan argan oil in the mascara down to the concealer. If the name sounds familiar, for whatever it's worth, she's also a supermodel.
