Motze Opens on Valencia
Talented chefs Cortney Burns and Nick Balla left Bar Tartine to open their own project, Motze. The restaurant is named after an ancient philosopher and quietly opened in the old Herbivore space on Valencia last week. The menu has a strong Japanese foundation but in true Burns/Balla fashion draws on global inspiration in both technique and flavors using ingredients from their well-stocked larder of housemade soy, miso, various dehydrated and fermented things, dried teas, and more. The menu will change with what's available, but expect dishes such as mung bean noodles with calabrian chili oil, beets, nettle, and yogurt, or mushrooms with porcini broth, dumplings, and miso. // OpenTuesdays-Saturdays, 5:30pm-10pm, 983 Valencia St. (Mission), motze.xyz
James Beard Foundation's Taste America: SF Edition
Join San Francisco's top culinary talent for a night of delicious bites this Saturday at the Intercontinental. The night starts with a pre-dinner reception featuring bites and drinks from Tim Archuleta of Ichi Sushi, Srijith Gopinathan of Campton Place, Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu's, and more. Next is a four-course seated dinner from Chefs Anita Lo, Charles Phan, Belinda Leong, and Daniel Corey. Maybeck's Purveyor and Producer Dinner
Maybeck's is hosting a special dinner next Monday to honor three of their tastiest purveyors: Four Star Seafood, Flannery Beef, and Unti Vineyards. The event starts with a cocktail and hors d'ourvres reception followed by a three-course dinner with Unti wine pairings. The whole menu looks delicious but we're especially looking forward to the charcoal grilled dry-aged ribeye in lobster butter. Cooking Classes with Japan's Cocco Nomura at Rintaro
Rintaro is flying in the iconic Cocco Nomura to teach cooking classes at the restaurant. Nomura is a household name in the Tokyo culinary world and incorporates her knowledge of flower arrangement and tea ceremony into her cooking classes. Her latest book, Kienai Recipes, also won first place in the 2016 Gourmand Awards—so you know she's legit.
