For the third year in a row, the San Francisco Arts Commission is presenting one of the city's most unique art events: a DIY art collecting event bringing together celebrated Bay Area artists, and inviting the public to create a limited-edition artist's book by collecting original, artist-designed stamps in a custom edition Moleskine "passport" notebook. This year, on Sunday, October 14th from noon to 4 p.m., join hundreds of do-it-yourself art collectors and take to the streets of North Beach, following a designated route, to collect stamps from the eleven participating local artists themselves—including North Beach resident Jeremy Fish.
A renowned illustrator and fine artist, Fish is set to reveal a large painting simultaneously with Passport, as well as stamping “passports” at Al’s Attire, where one of his paintings—which he calls "neighborhood signage"—will also be sited.
For the last six years, Fish has invested a lot of his free time trying to slowly add these "signs" to "his" neighborhood. "My job is one that allows me these lovely community-oriented opportunities, to give something back visually to San Francisco's most special neighborhood, as living here has completely changed my life. If all goes as planned, and my new signs go up, I will have a total of seven 'signs' for businesses I support in a five-block radius from my home!"
Thus is Passport's annual mission: to bring hundreds of people to a new SF neighborhood each year, partnering with local businesses, and introducing participants to artists who make a difference in our local cultural scene.
Passport 2012 takes place Sunday, October 14th, and home base will be on Washington Square Park. For more information, and to purchase your own passport online, click here.
