San Francisco plays host to visiting authors of all stripes, not to mention a bevy of homegrown literary talent. In celebration of that, we're introducing a new weekly roundup of the best literary events in the city. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Want to submit an upcoming event for consideration? Go here.
Writers with Drinks
Saturday, July 9th, 7:30-9:30 pm, at Make-Out Room (3225 22nd St.)
This monthly event brings together a diverse group of writers (including a number of out-of-towners) to read short excerpts of their work. Featured readers for the July edition include Los Angeles-based Charles Yu, poet/novelist Jesse Ball, retro career-advice guru Lynn Peril, and novelist Anna North (more on several of these authors below). Admission is a $5-10 sliding scale, and true to the event's name, drinks are available at the bar.
Anna North (America Pacifica)
Thursday, July 7th, 7:30 pm, at The Booksmith (1644 Haight St.)
Jezebel staff writer Anna North will read from her first novel at both The Booksmith and Writers with Drinks (see above). Set in the dystopian future that follows a second Ice Age, America Pacifica tells the story of a young girl searching for her mother in one of the last habitable places on Earth.
Litquake Presents: The New Literary Vanguard
Sunday, July 10th, 7-8:30 pm, Brava Theater (2781 24th St.)
In an attempt to offer programming outside of the annual festival, Litquake is bringing three top novelists from beyond the Bay Area to the Mission for an intimate reading. Charles Yu (How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe), Adam Levin (The Instructions), and Jesse Ball (The Curfew) will all read from their latest work, followed by a Q&A session. Tickets are $12.50 in advance or $15 at the door, and can be purchased here. (Yu and Ball are also appearing at Writers with Drinks the night before; see above.)
Karen Solomon (Can It, Bottle It, Smoke It) and Joanne Weir (Wine Country Cooking)
Saturday, July 9th, 11 am, at Book Passage SF (1 Ferry Building)
This Saturday morning book promotion/cooking class, organized by CUESA, ties in nicely with the surrounding Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market. Karen Solomon is a local writer whose books focus on the joys of DIY cooking; her latest book offers advice on making everything from cornflakes to ginger beer. Fellow local Joanne Weir, who hosts a cooking show on KQED, focuses on seasonal dishes made with local produce. Both authors will offer tips and samples.
Adam Ross (Ladies and Gentlemen)
Thursday, July 7th, 7:30 pm, at Book Passage Corte Madera (51 Tamal Vista Blvd.)
Adam Ross earned critical raves for last year's novel Mr. Peanut, which examined the darker side of a marriage after the wife's untimely death; the book earned spots on the year-end lists of The New Yorker, The Economist, and The New Republic, among others. Ladies and Gentlemen, his follow-up, is a collection of short stories based around deception and misunderstandings.
