San Francisco walks to the beat of its own fashion drum. We know this, but others, like Guy Trebay from The New York Times, describes our beloved foggy city as “the land that style forgot."A harsh, yet catching opener in his somewhat controversial article describing our truly eclectic sense of fashion.

Upon investigating our city, Trebay talks to locals and learns about our own — loosely termed — fashion “tribes”: the Mission tribe, the Haight tribe, the Castro tribe, and the Pacific Heights tribe. However, like the true San Franciscans we are, there are no strict boundaries in these fashion clans — a girl in the Mission won’t get shot down for donning a Longchamp bag — unlike similar fashion groupings set forth in the East Coast.

Most notably, Trebay points out our incredible knack for mixing together designer duds with low-end pieces along with our non-stigmatized view on re-using. He calls out local consignment hot spot, Sui Generis as, “A consignment store run as if by museum curators, Sui Generis sells a selection of vintage clothing (Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirts alongside John Lobb shoes and suits from Comme des Garçons) so smartly merchandised that a consumer quickly forgets that the stuff on display is used goods."

Not that we don’t ever run to Barneys to pick up those coveted YSL booties that just came out, we just pride ourselves in making conscious, fashion-forward decisions and of course, finding that rare designer deal. And yeah, we have no qualms with pairing a two dollar dress with a Proenza Schouler bag — and are proud of it.
