This week, we take you to a little-known forested pocket of the city. The idyllic Macondray Lane is a wooded pedestrian path on the south-eastern side of Russian Hill in San Francisco. The enclave is bursting with old world charm, quaint cobbled roads, flowers hanging everywhere, deep shadows, and dappled sunlight from the green canopy above. The lanes is named for Frederick W. Macondray, a merchant who brought his family and Zinfandel vines to California in the 1850s.

It's thought that Armistead Maupin used Macondray Lane as the inspiration for Barbary Lane in his famed Tales of the City series.
