We visited Yerba Buena Island to see what a day in the life of our local San Francsico Coast Guard sector is like. We captured the early morning fog, the mid day flare exercises, and night operations out on the water with a local helicopter unit. At any time, you can find them engaged in all sorts of tasks including search and rescue, homeland security, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and boating safety.
Since the early 1900s, the Navy and Coast Guard has been present on Treasure Island and the station now consists of engineering shops, deck shops, administrative offices, and barracks, as well as the waterfront pier area.
This unit's area of responsibility covers San Francisco Bay south to San Jose; from Pier 45 to Alcatraz to Angel Island; and north just past the Richmond Bridge.
