This year’s programming of events, exhibits, and shows spans more than 70 institutions all over the Bay Area, including renowned museums and independent galleries.
It all kicks off with a free party at ICA San Francisco on Saturday, January 18th (6pm to 9pm, RSVP for free) and runs through Sunday, January 26th.
Here’s what you won’t want to miss.
Minnesota Street Project Foundation and re.riddle: Michail Michailov, Self-Brainwashing
Be part of the art in this immersive performance from Michail Michailov confronting our relationship with reality, artifice, illusion, and truth in contemporary culture. Donning white protective suits, participants will become enveloped in ethereal white foam. This is no college foam party, however, with an experience that invites both delight and disorientation in an unforgettable sensory environment that breaks down barriers between the physical and the abstract. Not feeling the bubbles? You can stop by as an observer.
// Self Brainwashing runs from January 17 through February 8 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 1201 Minnesota St. (Dogpatch), eventbrite.com.
Haines Gallery: Meghann Riepenhoff, State Shift
Extreme weather becomes poignant poetry in the hands of artist Meghann Riepenhoff. During a period of displacement from her Pacific Northwest home, Riepenhoff created a series of cyanotypes that explore natural sites across the country highly compromised by human intervention. The complex patterns, striking colors, and fluid formations of her works straddle the organic and abstract, physically and emotionally striking.
// State Shift runs from January 22 through March 15 at Haines Gallery, 2 Marina Blvd,, Building C (Marina), hainesgallery.com. An opening reception will be held Friday, January 24 from 6pm to 8pm.
GCS Agency: Electric Coffin, Slumber Party
Enter the fever dream that is Electric Coffin’s solo show exploring nostalgia, futurism, and consumerism through fine art and pop culture. The Seattle-based duo Duffy De Armas and Stefan Hofmann create works suspended between familiar memory and surreal fantasy. Their bold collection blends handmade and digital elements in large-scale sculptures and mixed-media compositions that straddle consciousness and vivid reality.
// Slumber Party runs from January 21 through February 7 at GCS Agency, 201 Jackson St. (FiDi), gcsagency.com. The opening reception for Slumber Party will be held Tuesday, January 21, 6pm to 9pm.
SF Camerawork: Len Keller, Darcy Padilla, and Elizabeth Sunflower, A Strange Vibration
Presented in collaboration with the Bay Area Lesbian Archives, Ricki Blakesberg, and Retro Photo Archive, this exhibit offers a candid look back at women’s lives in the Bay Area from the 1970s through the 1990s. See the Queer Liberation Movement, the AIDS crisis, and sex workers in North Beach through the eyes of three photojournalists—Len Keller, Darcy Padilla and Elizabeth Sunflower—whose unique identities inform each of their works. This significant collection examines history and community, and what it means to live at the margins.
// A Strange Vibration runs from January 22 through April 22 at SF Camerawork in Fort Mason Center, 2 Marina Blvd., Building A (Marina), sfcamerawork.org.
Heath Collective: Windy Chien and Tung Chiang Studio Tours
Get an intimate look at the work and spaces of two of Heath’s renowned artisans—clay studio director Tung Chiang and fiber artist Windy Chien. The artists themselves will lead tours of their studios and teach visitors firsthand about their processes, practices, materials, and inspirations. Expect to see both works in progress and available pieces and to walk away with a rare glimpse at the inner workings of these accomplished artists.
// Public studio tours are held on January 25 and January 26 from 10am to 5pm at Heath Ceramics, 2900 18th St. (Mission), heathceramics.com
Johansson Projects: Nicole Irene Anderson, A Tangled Coexistence
Venture outside the city into the evocative landscapes of Northern California-based painter and draftswoman Nicole Irene Anderson. The artist creates fantastic scenes of scenic unease in richly colorful pieces haunted by loneliness yet shimmering with the sublime. Through exacting detail, Anderson critically appraises the greed and violence of western expansion and questions of what land both offers and requires.
// A Tangled Coexistence runs through January 31 at Johansson Projects, 2300 Telegraph Ave. (Oakland), johanssonprojects.com. A walk-through with the artist will be held on Saturday, January 25, from 10am to 11am.
