This week I'm feeling my inner homebody looming large. More than ever, there seems to be a resurgence of spending more time nesting, and entertaining at home. The economy's got everyone a bit down, I know, but there's also an upside to slowing down a little, spending more time with family and friends within the confines of your own comfy dwelling. You can take pride in the smallest tasks, like canning & preserving, or painting a room a sunny bright color, or washing your linens by hand in some lavender scented water. It feels good to get back to the basics and appreciate the simpler things in life. So this week in Sfgirlbybay's Seven for 7x7, we're taking some time out for a few moments of zen.
1. Making marmalade with Molly Watson. Molly is a food writer who runs the weekly Friday Food Files on sfgirlbybay. This week she showed us how to make a lovely, tart lemon marmalade from the over abundance of lemons you (or your neighbors!) might have hanging from your trees. Yum, delish and all homemade!
2. We're a Handmade Nation. Check out indie artist Faythe Levine's documentary look at the craft phenomenon sweeping the country. The Handmade Nation film documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that is sure to inspire. You can also find the book, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design on amazon.
3. Document your life the old-fashioned way. What's more fun than a photographic journal of your San Francisco days? I take a camera with me everywhere, and the really lightweight, plastic Holgas and Diana cameras are easy to carry and give you an unexpected result each and every time. Bring back film, and the element of surprise in every roll. You can find them at your local Urban Outfitters and online at Lomography.
4. This is not your grandmother's scrapbooking. It's time to start documenting your inspirations in the form of a scrapbook. Erin, from Design for Mankind blogs each Wednesday for sfgirlbybay on how to get out from behind the computer monitor and on to enjoying the simple things in life. For some inspiration and scrapbooking ideas on how to get started, she shares the incredible scrapbooks of one of her favorite independent fashion labels, Dutch designer lefke de Roos.
5. Get your bedding in order. One of the best and most soothing and comforting things in the world is a hot bath and then crawling into a bed freshly made with soft, clean sheets. San Francisco-based designer India Rose has got just the linens you need to achieve beautiful bedding perfection.
6. They can't take it all with them. Beautiful bay are shop Rose & Radish is picking up stakes from its Hayes Valley home and heading to fresh ground. In the meantime, we save big on the inventory they won't be packing up. Beautiful artwork, ceramics and linens and soaps like these that are almost too pretty to be used, all marked down 20 -70%.
7. And lastly, liven up sparse walls with some fresh new art, and support independent artists on etsy at the same time. Alicia Bock is one of my very favorite photographers, and her beautiful work is affordable for anyone. Taken with an antique Polaroid sx-70 camera, photographs from this camera have a lovely soft texture, full of vintage, nostalgic charm.
