San Francisco's favorite troubadour, Sonny Smith, had quite the 2010 with his band, the Sunsets. Spreading their gospel to the country on an endless national tour, the band's first LP Tomorrow Will Be Alright earned heaps of critical praise from all corners of the music scene and got the Sunsets signed to venerable indie label Fat Possum (which also houses current faves the Smith Westerns and Yuck). Now the prolific quartet's announced their rabidly-anticipated sophomore album, Hit After Hit.
The first single to be dropped, "I Wanna Do It", is signature Smith, but with a more grandiose, fleshed out sound. A definite change from their warm, ramshackle oeuvre that recalled the early Velvet Underground (if they hadn't been so hellbent on being cool), it's only a taste of what tricks this band, one of San Francisco's best, has up its sleeve. As soon as it drops on April 12, expect to hear a whole lot more love for the Sunsets than you ever have before.
