Rich white wines, especially white Burgundies, are popular around the holidays. They're delicious with cheese, lobster, crab and all the other rich things we like to eat. Problem is, they're super expensive. Here's an alternative:

As Sortes is one of the most remarkable Spanish whites on the market right now. It drinks like a top notch white Burgundy (which is made from Chardonnay), but actually comes from the western edge of Spain and is made from the Godello grape. It's wines like this that give me hope for the improvement of California Chardonnay. If a winemaker (in this case, Rafael Palacios, brother of the famous Alvaro of L'Hermita fame) can do this with Godello, we should be able to make more interesting Chardonnay here. Pick some up and try it with oysters or lobster.
