At 48, Takashi Miike has directed more than 70 theatrical, television and straight-to-video productions. In 2009, a slow year by his dizzying standards, he has already released two films, with another, his 2010 remake of Eiichi Kudo’s Thirteen Assassins, on the horizon. So it’s no surprise that the sixth Another Hole in the Head Film Festival features two imports bearing his name: Detective Story, a hard-boiled whodunit starring frequent collaborator Kazuya Nakayama (Izo), and Crows: Episode Zero, a frenetic slice of highly stylized violence inspired by Hiroshi Takahashi’s comic books.

As one might expect from a filmmaker best known for his lurid revenge fantasies (Ichi the Killer) and horrific depictions of love gone wrong (Audition), Detective Story and Crows are effectively brutal, but the similarities pretty much end there. The former, which follows a quirky private eye’s quest to catch a vicious serial killer, is for the most part a serious-minded thriller in the tradition of Manhunter, and easily the more absorbing of the two. The latter, a manga-style battle royal, is light on plot – rival high-school gangs wage war for territorial bragging rights – but a visual treat for those who found Fight Club’s therapeutic pugilism too tame.

The evening’s festivities begin at 5 p.m. with Mike Davis’ Sex Galaxy, an outlandish comedy handcrafted entirely using recycled stock footage from classic sci-fi adventures, sex-education clips, stag footage and burlesque reels shot between 1926 and 1979.
