1. The family that works together, eats together
On April 24th, McCormick & Kuleto’s Seafood Restaurant in San Francisco and Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto in Berkeley will honor National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day by offering a free lunch entrée and beverage to children accompanying their parents. Both restaurants are offering this special in the belief that “there is no better way for parents to connect with a child than to spend a quality meal together.”
2. Waste not, want not
In honor of a new initiative to reduce waste at the Ferry Building, the good folks at the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture will be hosting an 11 a.m. cooking demonstration on April 26 by local chef Craig Stoll, of Delfina. Using ingredients purchased that morning, Stoll will pass on tips to help local foodies step lightly on the planet. CUESA’s teaching kitchen is located outside the Ferry Building under the arcades north of the clock tower.
3. Pacific crossroads
Celebrate San Francisco’s reputation as the crossroads of pan-Asian culture and cuisine with a grand tasting at the Asian Art Museum. On Friday, April 25, $125 buys you an evening of signature dishes from Asia de Cuba, Bong Su, Yank Sing and Red Lantern, among many other local restaurants, as well as drinks from Phuket Beer, Sake2Me and Yamazaki. Lighter on the wallet is a $25 ticket to the culinary seminars on Saturday, April 26, where you can chat with culinary superstars like Cecilia Chiang, Pim Techamuanvivit and our own Sara Deseran.
4. Everybody loves Italian
But not everybody knows Sardinian. On Monday, April 28, the owners of La Ciccia will take you on a virtual tour of the island with a special spring lamb menu, which will include vegetables stuffed with lamb, prosciutto and pecorino cheese; Sardinian maccheroni with lamb ragout; and roasted baby lamb. The price is $70 per person, which includes wine; tax and gratuity are extra.
5. Something fishy
Anchor & Hope, the hot new seafood spot from the trio that brought us Salt House and Town Hall, opened to the public yesterday for dinner and will be launching their lunch menu on the 28th. Get your lobster roll on in the new renovated space; start that first date with the Loveboat platter. 83 Minna St., 415-501-9100.
6. Ready, steady, pour
Coffee nerds, on your marks! Blue Bottle Café, the temple of all things caffeinated, will be hosting Shiho Ootou, the 2007 Japanese siphon champion, next Wednesday. In case you haven’t yet surfed the third wave of coffee (wherein the first wave was Dunkin’ Donuts and the second was the empire that Seattle started), siphoning is the practice of steaming, stirring and pouring the perfect cup of zen java. Ms. Shiho Ootou will be appearing at the cafe from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 30.
7. E-I-E-I-O
Also on April 30, Joel Schirmer of Dirty Girl Produce and Staffan Terje of Perbacco will talk about the crucial role of farmer-and-chef dialogue in both planting and menu planning. Seating is first-come, first-serve starting at 6 p.m. in the Union Square Cellar Kitchen at Macy’s. A $10 donation to CUESA will get you a seat at the demonstration, a sample of a featured dish made from Dirty Girl produce, a glass of wine from Benziger Family Winery, a Ferry Plaza Farmers Market tote, and a sample of Origins’ new organic skin-care line.
