The Velveteen Rabbit

Told from the perspective of a stuffed bunny that wants to become real, the Velveteen Rabbit is about the love of a boy and toy. A 25-year San Francisco tradition, ODC’s performance of TheVelveteen Rabbit includes ODC’s powerful dancing, recorded narration by local legend Geoff Hoyle, score by Benjamin Britten, and vocals by Rinde Eckert. This lovely interpretation of Margery Williams’ beloved 1922 children’s tale has played to more than 350,000 people nationwide.

Smuin’s Christmas Ballet 

If you prefer vixens to fairies, hit up Smuin Ballet for this year’s dose of athletic seasonal cheer. A "Blue Christmas"-crooning Elvis gyrates as shrieking blondes faint at his feet. An array of vamps oust the Sugar Plum Fairy. Drooping evergreens get the chainsaw. The first act is an elegantly swaying tribute to traditional carols, with a few horny Jewish boys tossed in for good measure. The second act dons stilettos and the occasional bikini for a hefty dose of seasonal misbehavior.

Nutcracker Sweets

Mark Foehringer Dance Project’s fresh interpretation of the holiday classic is “abounding in charm and invention,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Nutcracker Sweets gives the nut-smashing soldier boy a contemporary twist with whimsical set design and powerful technique from a former ODC dancer in the lead role. It's for kids, but adults will enjoy this droll alternative.
