Design enthusiasts, get your butts to Berkeley. The 2016 Sunset Magazine Idea House was just unveiled, and it's Pintrest-worthy to say the least.
Every summer since 1998, Sunset Magazine has introduced a new house to the public, built from the ground up. Dubbed the Idea House, the new construction is meant to represent modern trends in interior design and architecture. The exact location changes every year (always west of the Rocky Mountains), and this year's home is in the Claremont Hills, only a short drive from Sunset's new headquarters in Jack London Square. It's also Sunset's first project in Northern California since 2012's house in Healdsburg.
Perched on a slope with views that stretch from Berkeley to San Francisco Bay, the four-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot, multi-level home showcases the latest trends and innovations in architecture, interior design, and sustainable gardening. The ultramodern exterior of the house is softened inside with antique rugs, French oak flooring, art from local makers, and classic vintage elements for an eclectic, art-filled showstopper.
A collaboration between Berkeley-based architect Robert Nebolon, local interior design star Lauren Geremia, landscape designer Michelle Derviss, and the Landmark Development Corporation, the 2016 Idea House is open for tours on weekends through September 25th. Tickets are $25, with partial proceeds supporting the Oakland Public Education Fund. At the end of September, the house will be put on the market. No telling yet what the asking price will be, but we expect it will fetch a pretty penny.
