This Week in Live Music: Justin Timberlake, FKA Twigs, Drive-By Truckers, & More
17 November 2014
To what god shall we direct our gratitude for the imminent showering of world-class entertainment? That would be Apollo, son of Zeus, brother of Artemis, friend of San Francisco.
Monday Double-Header: Death From Above (1st show), MSTRKFT (night show) at The Independent
Thanks to bands like SBTRKT, STRKFR, MGMT, and Monday night Independent marquee-gracer MSTRKFT, we could easily make the case we are living in the musical age of grammatical heresy. Who has time for vowels when there’s all these sweet bands to check out! Even the puritanical vowel-pushers among us have to admit MSTRKFT is terrifying fun, and indeed emblematic of what is happening now: a vaguely identifiable duo remixing the world with raw production experimentation and laptop wizardry. The Toronto duo caps off an interesting bill format for the Independent. MSTRKFT’s Jesse F. Keeler will do his part in dance-punk band Death From Above 1979’s early-evening set. WTHHLLNT.
Tuesday: Deerhoof at Great American Music Hall
It’s almost annoying how Deerhoof can convert endless inspiration into routinely exceptional, hyper-original expression. The SF indie rock institution is now 12 albums deep, and somehow still manages to strike creative gold each any every time. With the thrilling, evocative La Isla Bonita, all we can say is — save some genius for the rest of us, guys. All everyone else is saying is this is yet another step forward.
Thursday + Friday: Drive-by Truckers at the Fillmore
Few bands evoke the bleaker corners of Americana like Drive-By Truckers. The Athens, Georgia-based alt-country rock band could be any bar-room band in any rural dive, really. But they’ve made a spectacular career thanks to ol’ fashion American gumption and heartbreaking songwriting, always managing to strike a minor chord-feeling, even in the midst of a major-chord honky tonk throwdown.
Thursday: FKA Twigs at The Warfield
While it’s disturbing to consider what alternate universe from which FKA Twigs might hail, it’s comforting to know they at least speak English there. Everything else from this one-woman production, however, sounds completely independent from our time-space continuum — the helter-skelter production, Tahliah Debrett Barnett’s fearlessly jarring vocals, song structures that bear little resemblance to anything pop minds might recognize. There’s nothing like it, copycats be damned. Barnett’s live performances are also something profound to behold. Note Jimmy Fallon’s reaction to her performance on his show last week:
Saturday: Justin Timberlake at Oracle Arena
Whatever, bro. I’m going. Justin Timberlake is the truth.
