This Week In Live Music: Phosphorescent, Patti Smith, Mates of State, & More
19 January 2015
Sad news out of the Fillmore district last week: the beloved jazz/hip-hop lounge formerly known as Yoshi’s—and more recently known as The Addition—shut its doors this past week. In its honor, we suggest putting on a Duke Ellington record (The OKeh Ellington), pouring a glass of sumpin-sumpin, pouring some of said sumpin-sumpin on the floor, and remember that we at least still have Yoshi's Oakland and SFJazz Center.
Sigh.
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday: Patti Smith at The Fillmore
“Godmother of punk” Patti Smith found herself at an unexpected event last week—the red carpet of the Golden Globes. Smith’s wondrous lullaby “Mercy Is” was written exclusively for Darren Aronofsky’s film “Noah” and deservedly earned a nomination for Best Original Song. She explained to Elle UK, “I love that genre. And I'm very familiar with the text—I have a strong Bible education. And I'm a big fan of Russell Crowe, so it seemed like the job for me.” See and listen for yourself:
Thursday: Phosphorescent at Great American Music Hall
Phosphorescent’s alt-country explorations into the darkness and isolation comfort the soul in different ways each time. When he howls at the moon, we rejoice with him. When Matthew Houck sours, we sour with him. When he nods, we carry on. There’s something immediately inviting, where you want to go through every up and down with him, just because it sounds right. All of these reasons are why, in part, Phosphorescent’s 2013 album Muchacho ended up on virtually every best-of list.
Friday: Mates of State at Bottom of the Hill
Former San Francisco husband-wife duo Mates of State have built a reputation for crafting staggeringly cohesive albums of super catchy big-pop anthems. The band knows who they are, who they represent, how to capture the push and pull of companionship, and how to make it fun. It’s impossible not to pick up on the chemistry between their vocal choruses and calls-and-responses. In other words: if you’re not charmed, you’re not paying attention.
Saturday: Portland Cello Project at the Chapel
Watch this Portland Cello Project cover of Kanye West’s "All of the Lights" and do four things: 1) marvel at how beautiful Kanye’s arrangements are, 2) stand in awe of the sheer grace and audacity of the Portland Cello Project (the percussion!), 3) buy tickets to Portland Cello Project, 4) profit.
