This Week's Hottest Events: Ice Skating, Animation, and OPENwater at St. George Spirits
08 November 2010
Play: Ice Rinks
Starting Wednesday, you can get your skate on at the annual Safeway Union Square ice rink. Go for a midday run on your lunch break or wait for dark and take in the holiday lights afterhours. Come Thanksgiving, you'll also have a decorative tree to admire. If you're trying to steer clear of tourist-crazy Union Square, opt for the Embarcadero Center Ice Rink, which opens on November 19. Either way, you have plenty of time. Both rinks stay open through the first week of January. unionsquareicerink.com, embarcaderocenter.com
Film: SF International Animation Festival
The fifth annual San Francisco International Animation Festival takes its urban cred to a new level by combining the imaginative works of the animation industry with alterna-pop lyrics and videos. At this four-day event, you’ll see the Gorillaz video for “Stylo” (the first single off Plastic Beach), in which the band will jam onscreen in CGI for the first time. And The Decemberists’ latest, The Hazards of Love, is no longer just for the ears—the entire album will be presented with coinciding animated films. $10; Thursday, 11/11 - Sunday, 11/14; Landmark's Embarcadero Center Cinema, 1 Embarcadero Center, sffs.org
Forum: OPENwater
The folks behind OPENrestaurant have cooked up the next iteration of their food-art experiment in the form of a dialogue about the planet's most fundamental resource: water. In collaboration with SFMOMA and St. George Spirits, the weekend-long event will highlight oceans and fisheries, urban and agricultural water management, and water as a medium. Debate the health of the Bay Area's water table and water politics over dishes of faux fish. Events are free/lunch $30/dinner $65; Saturday 11/13 - Sunday, 11/14; St. George Spirits, 2601 Monarch St., Alameda, openrestaurant.org
Drink: Bay Area Brew Fest
So, you missed Oktoberfest. Have no fear. Another brew fest is near. The inaugural Bay Area Brew Festival follows drink:eat:play’s successful L.A. and Orange County beer festivals. The price may be steep, but you get unlimited drinks for three hours, and you'll have dozens of domestics and internationals to choose from. And if you find yourself hungry, SF's best food trucks will be there to line your stomachs with goodness, so you can go back for more suds. $50; Saturday 11/3 - Sunday, 11/14; Fort Mason, Marina Blvd. and Buchanan St., drinkeatplay.com/bayareabrewfest
Art: Bound by a Common Geography
If Open Studios left you overwhelmed—too many artists, too little time—head for this low-key gallery exhibit featuring new work by Alison Kendal and Clare Judith Bowers. Bound by a Common Geography will explore geography as a man-made construct and exemplifies the human tendency to divide, delineate, and organize nature. The work on view looks at bonds between individuals and shared environments, and the role that relationship plays in both the beauty and devastation of our surroundings. Free; Thursday 11/11 - Tuesday 11/30; Mina Dresden Gallery, 312 Valencia St., minadresden.com
