Cheese lovers, get your taste buds ready and your bikes tuned, because this Saturday is the Tour du Fromage, a bike ride to San Francisco’s finest independent cheese spots. Join Other Avenues Co-op Cheesemonger, JB Rumburg, as he takes you on an exploration of our city’s fromage frontier.
The bike tour will traverse the city, visiting independent cheese spots in nearly every neighborhood. Each spot includes a sample or two and some cheese education by the resident experts. Among the highlights: talking cheese (and sampling) with Rainbow Grocery’s world-famous Cheesemonger, Gordon Edgar. Cheese Plus and Mission Cheese in the Mission District make the list, as well as some delicious spots in the outer neighborhoods.
The Bay Area has a rich (and creamy, and sharp) cheese history. From Cowgirl Creamery to Ig Vella, our corner of the world has made a name for itself in the global cheese market—and this ride looks to explore a fair amount of our locally-made and locally-sold cheese.
Ride details: Meet at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park (501 Stanyan Street) at 10 a.m. Bring a lock and maybe a few other snacks—unless you’re used to surviving on cheese alone. Rain cancels the ride, though the forecast looks pretty good. Free for San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members (bring your card) and $5 donation for non-members. Happy pedaling, and happy cheese sampling.
