If you want to have a successful night out in this town, you need a plan—and it better be a good one. Since it's not always easy to strike that perfect balance between pre-dinner drink, food and a show, we bring you the Triple Threat series — a block-by-block guide to nights out that only require one parking space. In today's edition, the part of SoMa referred to as Yerba Buena.
See: The SFMOMA asked a range of visual artists and poets to respond to the fight for equal rights for same-sex couples. The resulting retrospective The Air We Breathehits the museum this Saturday. The exhibit includes haunting portraitsbyFrancesca Woodman—30 years after her untimely death by suicide—along with works by Simon Fujiwara, Robert Gober, Amy Sillman, and poetry by John Ashbery. More information here.
Drink/Snack: After the museum doors close at 5:45, stroll over to the W Hotel's brand new Trace and check out the total 180 the decor has taken. Final softening touches, like pillows and flowers are still en route, but the streamlined Stanley Saitowitz design still makes a solid backdrop for a drink. Chef Paul Piscopo'snew seasonal slant to the menu is worth sampling too. Try the chicken liver or one of the housemade pastas.
Eat: One of the padded barstools at California-Persian restaurant Zare at Fly Trap is a cozy place to end your SoMa tour. Have bartendress Valen West pour you a refreshing, gin-powered Minted Memory cocktail, or whatever strikes you on their interesting list of drinks. As far as sustenance goes, we always order the pistachio-dotted Persian meatballs and the trout salad with creme fraiche-blanketed cucumber "noodles." This weekend, Chef Hoss Zare is also creating a fall special: Persian "Peking duck" with braised persimmon and jeweled sticky rice.
