Video House Tour: A lavishly renovated Presidio Heights mansion with bay views asks $23.5 million

It ought to have ample square footage filled with spacious rooms for both resting and entertaining; gorgeous interior design and thoughtful details; and totally unnecessary, lavish extras like a gym and a wine cellar. And it absolutely must have a prime location with killer views.
Originally built in 1923 and the recipient of an extensive renovation by Sutro Architects and JKA Interior Design, this house at the edge of the Presidio has it all, with Golden Gate Bridge views to boot.
Since purchasing it in 2010, the current owners have transformed the residence into a 7,100-square-foot, four-story ode to Parisian design, inspired by some of City of Light's iconic architecture including the Joseph Dirand–designed Chloé boutique on Rue Saint Honoré.
Door and window heights were raised, an elevator was added, systems were upgraded, and even the garage was relocated, but the bones of the home were kept in place. Emphasis remains on original wood details, high ceilings, and views of the Presidio and San Francisco Bay. The result is a fusing of traditional and contemporary.
"It is remarkably quiet, and you can feel the quality of the construction materials," says listing agent Nina Hatvany.
Off a formal entryway, the main level is a showplace of design delights including fumed French white oak herringbone floors, a grand curved staircase with handcrafted bronze railings, and rich walnut-paneling in the library. "There are many spectacular details, but the ornate crown molding on the main level is quite extraordinary," Hatvany adds.
The front of the home is characterized by glamorous entertaining spaces: a living room with south- and west-facing French doors that open to Juliet balconies; a sexy dining room with custom wax-striated blue-gray paint and platinum-leaf detailing; and an additional sitting room with an adjacent bar, accented by smoky mirrored cabinets and fully equipped with a Perlick wine refrigerator, ice maker, and shelving for bottles and barware.
At the back, the kitchen is compact but deluxe with a Calacatta marble island and marble slab backsplash, custom cabinetry, and high-end appliances including a Miele dishwasher and Wolf cooktop. The adjacent butler's pantry houses a Subzero refrigerator, yet another wine fridge, and double ovens. A cozy family room with a wood-burning fireplace and vintage Portoro marble hearth is the star of this space. Glass doors off the breakfast area step out onto the deck, which has a panoramic view featuring the GGB.
Upstairs, an entire level is devoted to private quarters with five bedrooms in all, plus a laundry room and closets. The primary suite has its own sitting area and terrace; a walk-in closet with a center island and custom shelving; and a large, spa-like bathroom with marble floors, a marble-topped double vanity, glass rain shower, and an extra-long soaking tub that enjoys those requisite views.
On the top floor, a leaded skylight and a circular window permeate the stairwell and landing with natural light. An airy feel continues throughout, with several picture windows in an additional family room. Built-in cabinets offer storage, while an integrated wet bar and another wine fridge promise easy entertaining or lounging with the family. A home office, gym, and sprawling roof terrace complete this floor.
With access from the garage, the bottom floor has a guest bedroom with its own full bath and an extra den, but the backyard is the focal point here. Outside, a paved area with a heater makes for a lovely space to dine alfresco, while a turfed lawn surrounded by privacy hedges means there's plenty of green space to complete this private retreat.
