Our city is chock-full of interesting people and wild personalities. Overwhelmed by the coolness? Every week we'll pick one standout local we'd love to be friends with to answer seven essential questions about their life in San Francisco.
Anna Hillburg is a classically trained, trumpet-playing San Franciscan who's been jamming with local bands like The Dodos and Fresh and Onlys for years. After making everyone else sound awesome for far too long, she's gone solo, and just released her first self titled album.
Anna's record is super fun and a touch pop-y, with a little classic Fleetwood Mac/Joni Mitchell thrown in–a perfect summer in SF mix of tunes. Plus, she brought in great performers like Joe Haener of Gris Gris, Greg Moore of Joanna Newsom, and Logan Kroeber of The Dodos for guest appearances and recorded the whole thing at the super cool The Creamery Studio in Oakland.
As you can see from her answers, this chick isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think of a "classically-trained musician," but we think her music rocks and laughed all the way through this We Wanna Be Friends With Q&A.
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
I live in San Francisco's hippest neighborhood, the Mission! I'm very happy in my hood–every year more rich young white people move in, and more criminals move out!
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
I love to get tater tots and jalapeño poppers delivered right to my door even though Jay's Cheesesteak is a mere two blocks away. I commonly answer the door in pajamas, and tip generously out of shame!
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
Me, a couple of tall cans of Bud Light, and a pack of cigarettes, holed up in my tiny bedroom watching episode after episode of "Hoarders".
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
I head out to North Beach for an authentic Italian lunch, and take in a show at the Lusty Lady. Then I shoplift on the way home from local sustainable organic markets.
5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
When I want to leave the city I either go to the Sunset or the Richmond for some Chinese food.
6. Quick-fire round
Burrito or Burger?
I can't pick, I hate both!
Presidio or Golden Gate Park?
The Presidio has a bowling alley, but GG park has drugs for sale... Tough call!
BiRite or Mitchell's?
Pinkberry in LA!
Bike or MUNI?
Limousine.
Fort Mason or Dolores Park?
I wish I could combine these two! Like take the cannons from Fort Mason and use them on the geeks at Dolores Park.
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach?
Baker Beach is a nude beach. You do the math.
Three words that describe your life in SF?
Depression, anxiety, fabulousness.
