Our city is chock-full of interesting people and wild personalities. Overwhelmed by the coolness? Every week we'll pick one standout local we'd love to be friends with to answer seven essential questions about their life in San Francisco.
Benny Gold has one of those magical stories it feels like could only happen in a place as cool as SF. While working as graphic designer, Benny would stick a simple "Stay Gold" sticker with his signature cursive and little paper plane graphic around the city in his spare time. A few years later and Benny would have a mini skateboarding street wear empire, impressive collab's, and a pristine Mission retail store under his belt.
The attitude may be alternative, but the design savvy is anything but sloppy or ill-conceived. Just like his 16th Street shop, everything Benny creates is detail-oriented, precise, and dare we say, beautiful. And anyone who follows him on social media would agree, he seems like a pretty humble, nice guy too. Thanks for taking time to answer our We Wanna Be Friends With Q&A!
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your hood?
I call the Mission District home. I have lived and worked in the neighborhood for a long time now and I love it. My entire life revolves around the 5 blocks from my house, my store and my warehouse.
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
Namu Gaji is hard to beat. It's my favorite neighborhood restaurant and I would recommend it to anyone.
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
My perfect night out is basically a good meal and drinks with family and friends.
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
My low-key afternoons are spent skating and drinking tall cans at the DMV. Red curbs are the best and it is always a fun time!
5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
I get out of the city to go on skateboarding day trips a lot. There are some epic spots around Pacifica with amazing views.
6. Quick-fire round:
Burrito or Burger?
Always a Burrito. I have been vegetarian my entire life so not many burger options for me. The veggie burger at Monk's Kettle is amazing though!
Presidio or Golden Gate Park?
Golden Gate Park is special and so many hidden things to explore.
BiRite or Mitchell's?
BiRite.
Bike or MUNI?
Bike!
Fort Mason or Dolores Park?
Dolores is a block from my house and there is always something going on there.
The Independent or the Fillmore?
Fillmore has so much right SF history.
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach?
Neither - China Beach.
7. Three words that describe your life in SF?
Five Block Radius.
