Clown. Mime. Comedian. Bartender. Jill Vice has quite the impressive resume.
Local performer Jill Vice has experience in every quirky job SF has to offer, from clown to bartender. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with Tony Labat, trained in circus and clowning with Jeff Raz at the San Francisco Circus Center Class, and studied mime and mask with Leonard Pitt and James Donlon at the Flying Actors Studio Class. Oh yah, and she once toured the UK as the lead singer and guitarist in a punk band called Chester.
Is it obvious yet why we want to be friends with this badass local?
Jill's latest project, “Tipped & Tipsy” (which won BEST OF FRINGE at the 2013 San Francisco Fringe Festival) just ended a succesful run at The Marsh. The story of a bartender named Candy, three of her favorite regulars, the owner, and an assortment of saloon denizens, all drinking themelves to death – Jill plays all 14 characters without any props. After working as a bartender in SF for 13 years and at over 28 bars (some for just 1 day), it's safe to say Vice had a lot of inspiration for the raunchy and hilarious show.
Now that's she's taking a break before launching into her next (probably hilarious) project, we took the chance to ask the comedian seven essential questions about her life in SF. Behold:
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
I live near Dolores Park. I would like to move, but being an artist in the city means staying in an apartment for extended periods of time or being homeless. I chose the former.
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
Banana cream pie from Church Street Chow.
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
Oooh, okay! My sister would pick me up on her scooter and we would go to the theater then eat at Millennium followed by a soak in a hot tub. Yeeeesssss.
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
I put on the big white sneakers and start walking. Land’s End is my new favorite walk. The fog rolling in over the ocean, the dramatic cliffs – It’s like being in a 1940’s movie.
5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
Point Isabel. I’m a dog squealer.
6. Quick-fire round:
Burrito or Burger? Burrito
Presidio or Golden Gate Park? GGP
BiRite or Mitchell's? Three Twins
Bike or MUNI? Walk or Lyft
Fort Mason or Dolores Park? Dolores (it’s my front yard)
The Independent or the Fillmore? The Fillmore. I used to bartend there so it’s like visiting family.
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach? Baker Beach
7. Three words that describe your life in SF?
A Bohemian Rhapsody
