We Wanna Be Friends With Editor in Chief of The Bold Italic, Jennifer Maerz
17 September 2014
Day-tripper, music junkie, and all around cool girl (oh, and did we mention newly-appointed editor in chief of The Bold Italic?) Jennifer Maerz lets us in on her chill life in San Francisco.
"Back when I had spare time for reals, I'd spend it taking lots and lots of road trips around Northern California or seeing shows," says Maerz of her long-gone free time in the City. These days, though, the ex-music editor (SF Weekly, The Stranger) focuses on her upcoming wedding plans while holding down the fort at The Bold Italic.
"I'm really excited about where the site is at right now. I was here in the early days, back when there were just five of us sitting around a table making this thing happen," she said.
The site has since evolved into a local hub for arguments about rent, great design, and photos of four-year-olds eating at fancy restaurants. This year they're even branching out with their own creative conference, The Sum.
How does one manage all that energy? We asked Maerz seven essential questions about her life in SF to find out more.
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
I live in the Upper Haight and would love to move away from all the puke and tourists and goddamn Cha Cha Cha noise, but we have an awesome landlord and awesome rent so I feel pretty locked in. Instead of moving to the Outer Sunset, I bought a bike so I can pretend I live out there from time to time (at least for the length of a bike ride).
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
Cioppino. I've always had a thing for fish stew on foggy nights.
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
Hanging out with my dude, walking around the city. On our second real date, we did this epic walk from parks to hills above the lights. I'll never get over the romance of that kind of thing.
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
I will always love Golden Gate Park, no matter how many Segways and tour buses go through there. The park is the reason I moved to the Haight—after bouncing around the Castro and the Mission for years, I needed some trees and greenery, and to be someplace where nature dominates people. Plus, I love all the little pockets you can hide out in for hours.
5. Where's your favorite place to go on a day trip tog et away from the City?
It's hard for me to pick one since I am a constant day-tripper, but my route generally cycles between Santa Cruz (go Slugs!), the Russian River, and Big Sur.
6. Quick-fire round
Burrito or Burger: Burrito
Presidio or Golden Gate Park: GGP!
BiRite or Mitchell's: Mitchell's - or really, the Ice Cream Bar in my 'hood.
Bike or MUNI: Bike, although I do appreciate being able to wear a dress and take Muni from time to time.
Fort Mason or Dolores Park: Neither. One's too far and the other's too claustrophobic.
The Independent or the Fillmore: The Independent!
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach: Ocean Beach, I love that on a sunny day you see so many different types of people and families together.
7. Three words that describe your life in SF?
Peter Pan forever? I don't know, but I definitely appreciate the ways SF has kept my friends and I forever young.
