Our city is chock-full of interesting people and wild personalities. Overwhelmed by the coolness? Every week we'll pick one standout local we'd love to be friends with to answer seven essential questions about their life in San Francisco.
Gabi Moskowitz of Brokeass Gourmethas been one of our biggest cooking inspirations for years! Her blog is a go-to resource for meals whose ingredients cost less than $20, and we love the way she weaves stories about her life in the Mission through her recipes. And unlike many "budget" bloggers, Gabi doesn't skimp on healthy, fresh ingredients or opt for boring dishes–instead, she goes with fancy-sounding meals like Beef-Kimchi Nori Rolls and Coconut Shortcakes with Peaches and Cream.
Lucky for us, the Mission-dweller recently released her very first cookbook The Brokeass Gourmet Cookbook. You can also find her over at ZeroCater, a food startup that coordinates catering for companies from food trucks, chefs and local restaurants. She's pretty much living the SF dream (successful blogger AND startup worker) so we couldn't wait to catch up with Gabi for our We Wanna Be Friends With Q&A.
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
I live in the Mission, right by Dolores Park. As far as I'm concerned, it's the very best part of the city. That said, I am sincerely fond of many different neighborhoods, including Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, Nob Hill and Hayes Valley.
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
I get serious cravings for the spicy won tons from Shanghai Dumpling King.
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
My boyfriend and I have nailed the perfect date night in SF: Saturday night dinner at flour + water, followed dancing at soul night at Elbo Room. It can be special and romantic if it's just us, but it's a great group night too.
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
I either sneak out of the city and go for a walk along the Tiburon waterfront, or I turn off my cell phone, ignore the internet (and world at large) and bake fresh bread.
5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
Sonoma! I'm a Santa Rosa native, so I've always preferred Sonoma to Napa. I shoot up 101, hop off on 37, and always make sure to stop at Cline Vineyards and The Olive Press.
6. Quick-fire round:
Burrito or Burger?
Easy. Burrito. Super Vegetarian, with avocado instead of guacamole. Add hot sauce, onions and cilantro. No lettuce. Preferably from El Castillito or El Farolito.
Presidio or Golden Gate Park?
Golden Gate Park.
BiRite or Mitchell's?
BiRite.
Bike or MUNI?
Muni or walking.
Fort Mason or Dolores Park?
How is that even a question?! Dolores Park!
The Independent or the Fillmore?
The Independent.
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach?
Ocean Beach.
7. Three words that describe your life in SF?
Spicy, active, delicious
Gabi and her BF enjoying a day in Dolores
