Our city is chock-full of interesting people and wild personalities. Overwhelmed by the coolness? Every week we'll pick one standout local we'd love to be friends with to answer seven essential questions about their life in San Francisco.
Scott Youkilis is a pretty busy man right now. He's the chef/owner/madman behind not one, not two, BUT THREE super successful Mission eateries, Maverick, Hog & Rocks, and the new Hi-Lo BBQ. Although all his restaurants have unique menus, there's a similar vibe that carries throughout. The spaces are cleanly designed but still warm, the atmosphere is casual, and the food is unpretentious, familiar...and freaking delicious.
And just in case you need more convincing that this guy is seriously living the dream, Scott also makes "Youk's Hot Sauce" along with his brother, former All Star and NY Yankees first baseman Kevin Youkilis. (Whatever the Youkilis mom was feeding these kids...we want in on it.) We love his restaurants and his hot sauce, and are so excited to bring you this We Wanna Be Friends With Q&A!
1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?
Potrero Hill. Love our condo but I'd move back to Noe Valley (eight year resident) if I could.
2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?
Dim sum at Yank Sing is family favorite.
3. What's your perfect night on the town?
Check in on the restaurants, have a drink and snack in all of them, taxi to AT&T Park to watch Matt Cain throw a two hitter. Giants win game 5-0. Take taxi to NOPA for post game cocktail and snack, catch second half of favorite indie rock band show at the Independent, taxi home, pay the babysitter, pass out. Repeat as necessary.
4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?
This never happens anymore. Two kids, three restaurants, yada, yada, yada...But if I did get free time in the afternoon, I'd probably go read at the beach.
5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?
Wine Country.
6. Quick-fire round:
Burrito or Burger?
Burger.
Presidio or Golden Gate Park?
GGP.
Bi-Rite or Mitchell's?
Bi-Rite.
Bike or MUNI?
Bike, if I had one.
Fort Mason or Dolores Park?
Dolores.
The Independent or the Fillmore?
Indy.
Baker Beach or Ocean Beach?
Ocean.
Three words that describe your life in SF?
Busy, restaurateur, Dad!
