We're resurrecting an old series: Weird Art in Bars, in which we explore the wacky adornments on the walls of the city's favorite and under-the-radar watering holes.
Loló isn't a bar per se, but it is a bustling nuevo Latino restaurant on the hottest part of 22nd Street whose kitschy, eye-popping decor wholeheartedly earns its place into this weekly series. All of it is done by Lorena Zertuche Diaz, an artist and wife of one of the owners, Jorge Martinez. She draws inspiration from her childhood in spent in small Mexican villages, where explosive colors, textures and kitschy found objects (for instance, the restaurant's sign is spelled with old bottle caps) create a unique aesthetic that sucks you right into this family-owned restaurant. Before you know it, you're ordering wine and tapas. Even the bathroom has a wave soundtrack recorded in Sayulita, a village north of Puerto Vallarta.
Diaz's work also graces the interiors of restaurants, offices and cafes in Guadalajara, Mexico and Barcelona, Spain.
