We're off to see the wizard...the wonderful wizard of Oz! In celebration of Broadway's smash hit, Wicked, coming to town next week, two of San Francisco's top-notch restaurants, Roots and Daffodil, housed at the city's greenest hotels (sense a recurring theme here?) are rolling out special menus just for the occasion (guys, take note: they're doing all the date planning for you!).
The three-course, organic menus might include the vegetarian Quadling County Split Pea Soup, Munchkinland Wild Mushroom Tamale Pie with Chanterelles and Truffles, and housemade Fiyero Madeleines for dessert, to name a few. Top them all off with your own choice in witches' brew, from the Green Elixir adult beverage to the virgin Glinda concoction for your own little munchkins.
Available throughout the run of the show (Jan. 27 to June 27), the one-night package deal includes a deluxe room at either the Orchard or Orchard Garden (San Francisco's first LEED-certified hotel), a CD of the Wicked soundtrack, breakfast for two and a special turndown sweet from Sugar Bowl Bakery that even Elphaba would love. The cost is $179 and does not include theater tickets.
Based on the novel of the same name, Wicked is a contemporary spin on the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz and how the Wicked Witch of the West went from the bright-eyed, green-faced Elphaba--college roommate to a prettier, more popular Galinda (who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch)--to the menace who we all know and love (to hate). The popular musical had its world debut in San Francisco in 2003 and has since traveled around the globe and back, enjoying successful stints on both Broadway in New York and London's West End. It will return to the Orpheum Theatre next week.
