Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) does not believe in love, or so she says. At the very least, she doesn’t believe in fairy-tale love or the Hollywood mythology of romance, and her own experiences have turned her into yet a skeptic. Paper Heart, the new comedy from first-time feature director Nicholas Jasenovec, follows Yi as she embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn’t fully understand.
As she and Jasenovec (played in the movie by Redbelt's Jake Johnson) search for answers and advice about love, Yi talks with friends and strangers – among them, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and Seth Rogen. They each offer intriguingly diverse views on romance, as well as uniquely personal answers to the age-old question: Does true love exist? Yi meets a boy after her own heart, of course – Michael Cera, the fresh-faced star of Juno and FOX's Arrested Development. As their relationship develops on camera, her desire to discover the nature of love takes on fresh urgency.
Combining elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality and fantasy, Paper Heart (winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at this year's Sundance, and a nominee for the festival's Grand Jury Prize) offers a fresh perspective on modern love and attempts to redefine the classic love story.
