Whether you're an old-timer or newbie to SF, an art aficionado or neophyte, you've come across the work of Brian Barneclo. The local mural artist has made his mark all over the city, literally. His colorful cityscapes can be found at NOPA, Rye, 15 Romolo, Farmerbrown, and Suite 301 in Hotel des Arts. But perhaps his most well-known work is "Food Chain" on a sprawling wall in the Mission. Barneclo never seems to rest, as evidenced by his latest solo show at Fabric8 featuring new graphic paintings, a full-wall mosaic installation, and a preview of the forthcoming Systems Mural Project (a 24,000-square-foot panorama in Mission Bay). Here, a brief chat with the artist himself. Don't miss the opening reception this Saturday, June 18, from 7-10 p.m.

This solo show features a dozen or so new graphic paintings. What was your inspiration for these pieces?
I was inspired by a visit to the Musee du quai Branly in Paris and a trip to Barcelona.

How does the SF landscape influence your work?
It's all about the nooks and crannies.

What’s your process when working on a piece?
For the most part, I just go for it.

You are a San Francisco icon. How does it feel to have your stamp all over the city, on everything from building walls and cafes to clubs and chocolates?
Humbling.

Do you ever feel restricted by the wall- and canvas-painting medium? Any new medium you’d like to explore in the future?
Painting doesn't feel restrictive. In fact, I feel like it's just opening up again for me. But I do like to play around with video and 3-d type of stuff and writing.

Explain the origin of the Systems Mural Project, which you’re slated to start painting in September, and how people can get involved.
The whole thing started back in 2008 when I first came upon this wall.  Upon seeing it, I felt that it would be the perfect canvas. Since then I've been jumping through the hoops and hurdles to get permissions and raise the money to carry out the massive project. I've raised over $50,000 so far, which will be enough to get out there and get the painting started, but I'm still going to need to raise more money. I'm really hoping that the community comes together to support and participate in the project by donating on the website systemsmural.com. In a way, this is my way of giving back to the city that has given me so much inspiration over the years.
