In a phenomenon fondly referred to as "Coachella Fall-Out," some seriously big-time music acts are hitting the Bay Area in the next two weeks on their way to and from the annual desert party. This year, we're being graced by Spoon (4/13 at the Fox), Muse (4/13 at Oracle Arena), The Dead Weather (4/15 - 4/16 at the Fillmore ), Hot Chip (4/16 at the Fox), Thom York's new band, Atoms for Peace (4/14-15 at the Fox), Yeasayer (4/17 at the Fillmore), Vampire Weekend (4/19-4/20 at the Fox) and Jónsi (4/15 at Zellerbach Hall).
And in celebration of this good fortune, we're teaming up with Live Nation to give away 5 pairs of tickets to the 4/15 Jónsi show at Zellerbach Hall.
Even if you don't know Jón Jónsi Birgisson by name, you'll recognize his voice. He's been the one serving up those haunting falsetto melodies as the lead singer of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós (the island's second most popular musical export, behind Björk) for 15 years. And while Sigur Rós announced a hiatus earlier this year (to start families and stuff), Jónsi went along and produced his first solo record, Go, which dropped earlier this week to rave reviews. The sound is similar to that of Sigur Rós, but with a refreshing innocence and clarity. Also, he departs from his signature made-up language, "Hopelandic," (which, as far as we can tell, is Icelandic coupled with long vowel sounds) and sings in English. The album also integrates actual recordings of bees, flapping birds and howling wolves (!). It's worth a listen, especially if you watch footage of that 200-year dormant Icelandic volcano exploding en tandem.
His shows have been described as a "religious experience," and not just because his voice seems to come from the depths of R.E.M. sleep. The Zellerbach Hall show, for example, will integrate cinema, art and yes, roaming wildlife. Jónsi told SFGate, "There's kind of the joke with the band. If we suck, the show is still going to be good."
To win a pair of tickets, sign up for 7x7's daily e-mail newsletters (which are awesome anyways). We'll pick 5 people at random to go to the show (2 tickets for each person) and get their other-wordliness on.
