Gypset glamazons are already well versed in the textiles of Madeline Weinrib: She’s known for bringing Indonesian ikat back into vogue with her lacquered trays for Barneys New York and boho-fabulous fabric heels for Manolo Blahnik. Starting in April, the design icon will show off her full range of talent with the opening of her first West Coast showroom in the San Francisco Design Center.

Weinrib’s take on the centuries-old dyeing technique is a high-fashion form of abstract art. But if that’s your only experience with her work, you’ll be delightfully surprised. Her complete collection encompasses an array of products, including modern dhurrie and shag rugs, cashmere carpets, and a collection of vintage textiles hand selected during her frequent travels. Also, look for an assortment of African kuba cloth textiles and bright prints in such spice trail hues as indigo, saffron, and magenta.

Weinrib’s point of view: “Make it original. You can break all the rules.” She teams an eye for the contemporary with a reverence for historical culture and techniques like hand printing using carved teak blocks. Her look is refined, well traveled, and richly textured. In a word, eclectic—which makes it apropos for the Bay Area. “If I didn’t live in New York, I would live in San Francisco,” says the designer, who selected SF over Los Angeles for our aesthetic compatibility and indie ethos. Take that, LA.
