Each year, we look forward to Discarded to Divine, a very-San Francisco fashion event that pairs creativity and a community-minded twist to raise awareness and much-needed funds for St. Vincent de Paul Society programs supporting low-income people in need and victims of domestic violence.
And judging by a sneak peek we recently received of the garments, created by both new and established designers using discarded clothing and textiles donated to St. Vincent de Paul Society, the April 26 soiree looks like it will be the event’s biggest and best year yet.
The garments on view during a special session for event judges were not only inventive, but many were also quite wearable, such as a tulle bolero created to accompany a vintage tulle Chanel skirt and a student-designed color block pleat dress created using men’s pants and paired with a fur-trimmed cape.
As it was a judging session, we were not able to match designer names with the garments, but rest assured, there will be much talent on display come April: along with student and emerging designers from the San Francisco Bay Area, expect pieces from special guests such as Jay Nicolas Sario and Sweet P. of Project Runway, Colleen Quen, Cari Borja and others.
Also new this year, accessories and items for the home join the display of women’s apparel. The diverse assortment includes a scarf made entirely of gloves, fabric dolls, upholstered chairs, a lamp and a leather handbag inspired by the original Hermes Kelly bag.
Discarded to Divine takes place April 29. Tickets ($75 and up) are available here.
