I spoke with Jamie Kidson, one of the owners of Atomic Garden, a new Oakland boutique that stocks super-chic items that are eco-friendly. It’s a true lifestyle boutique, with everything from organic separates from Stewart + Brown and denim from Del Forte to recycled restaurant service wear and clean-burning beeswax candles.
When she mentioned pillows made of sustainable hemp linen by SF-based textile designer Sharon Spain, I perked up. I’ve been looking for good pillows for my couch, which I ordered in a neutral blue-grey color so that I could have fun with accent colors. Spain’s pillows are silk-screened by hand and feature nature-inspired designs that are artistic and stylish but won’t dominate the room (pictured, branches). Also tempting: the chance to design my own pillow online with Freddy & Ma. The company uses an organic cotton pillow insert and a filler that’s made from a sustainable down alternative called kapock. Pictured is the blank pillow and the birds-in-flight pattern I’m considering.
