Robert Duvall, winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as an alcoholic country singer in Tender Mercies (1983), will receive the San Francisco Film Society’s Peter J. Owens Award tonight at the Castro Theatre. The award recognizes actors whose work “exemplifies brilliance, independence and integrity.”

Duvall, 79, whose made his big-screen debut starring opposite Gregory Peck as the mysterious Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and later earned Oscar nominations for his performances in The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997) and A Civil Action (1998), will attend tonight’s celebration, which includes an onstage interview followed by a screening of his moving new drama, Get Low.
