Have you ever noticed that there aren't any real gyms on the south side of town (i.e. the Mission District)? There also aren't any full-on restaurants like the Tipsy Pig with flat screen TVs and sports on. Yet I know plenty of hipsters that go to the gym and love a good Giants' game. I know hipsters that even watch the 49ers.

Potentially related to this: Have you ever noticed that on the north side of town (i.e. Pac Heights, Marina, Cow Hollow) you'll never see people waiting in line for fancy coffee served by dead-serious foam artists? This is because this kind of coffee can only be found at full-service restaurants. In fact, on the north side of town, you'd be challenged to find someone that calls themselves a barista with any seriousness. Yet I know socialites that like to drink good coffee—even socialites without tattoos.

I think there's a connection here. (But what is it?)

My point is that things are changing. Former pastry chef Amanda Michael saw the Third Wave-coffee hole in Pacific Heights and has filled it with Jane, her new cafe-cum-restaurant on Fillmore Street, complete with a sandwich board announcing that Jane serves Four Barrel.

In Pac Heights style, Jane is hardly grungy. It doesn't have unfinished cement floors, reclaimed wood, and walls covered with the work of rotating artists. Jane is perky and crisp with a striking design that's black and white with a little red all over. The first restaurant project for Ken Fulk Inc., the floral wallpaper is the perfect backdrop to couple of ladies diving into some gossip and an Asian chicken salad. The patterned black and white tile tables make you want to just gaze at a slice of angel food cake glazed in dark chocolate and a cup of properly made coffee for a moment before consuming it. Unlike Four Barrel, Wi-fi is allowed, so you'll see people working away on their laptops. You'll also see the likes of Stanlee Gatti here.

The rest of Jane's menu is self-serve and straightforward and safe. A towering tuna Nicoise salad, a panini with scrambled eggs and tomato chutney. The cookies are good and I was eyeing a "bird seed" muffin too. Dinner service will start soon.

Of course Jane's barista hails from Seattle and looks the part. Proving that you can take the barista out of the roastery but you can't take the roastery out of the barista.

I feel a Crunch opening on Mission Street soon.
