Our city is known for its kick-ass coffee and cafés, with no shortage of places to get your third-wave jolt on. While the hordes have been flocking to The Mill on Divisadero for its Four Barrel coffee (and joining Josey Baker’s cult of toast), here are some other new (and smaller) projects that may have escaped your notice:
Due to open this Friday (or Saturday!) in the Inner Sunset across from Arizmendi is this project from Chris Morell and Tae Kim, serving Sightglass Coffee (although they plan to roast their own coffee in the back later on). Initial hours will be Fri–Sat 8 am–2 pm, Sun 9 am–3 pm. They’ll expand to six days a week very shortly after, as soon as in a couple weeks (closed on Mondays). Ride your bike and get 10% off your coffee! They are also going to host their first espresso workshop on June 1st, check out their events page for more. 1352A 9th Ave. at Irving.
Fifty / Fifty Coffee And Tea
Meanwhile, across the park in the Inner Richmond/Laurel Heights area is this new café on Geary. On tap: Ritual coffee, bubble tea, loose teas, tea smoothies, and baked goodies from Dynamo Donut and Devil’s Teeth. Neighbors are pleased with the cute look and laptop campers dig the Wi-Fi. Mon–Fri 7 am–8 pm, Sat 8 am–8 pm, Sun 9 am–6 pm. 3157 Geary Blvd. at Spruce, 415-684-8886.
Trouble Coffee Company (Bayview)
Giulietta Carrelli, the founder of the infinitely quirky Trouble Coffee café near Outerlands and Ocean Beach, recently opened a second (tiny) location in Bayview. She's serving a couple new blends: Guts (coffee) and Honor (espresso). Hours are Mon-Fri 8 am–4 pm. 1730 Yosemite Ave. at 3rd St.
La Paloma Café
Whether you are picking up a coffee or are hungry for a salad or sandwich, this Russian Hill place has you covered. It’s definitely a neighborhood spot with a cheerful style (it opened in the former Top o’ the Hill Market). They serve espresso from Weaver’s Coffee in San Rafael (whose roaster previously worked for Peet’s). 1096 Union St. at Leavenworth.
This quality import from Petaluma has expanded into SF with a location in the Public Utility Commission building in the Civic Center, providing workers and tourists in the area with a new option for Four Barrel coffee, breakfast, and lunch. Open Mon–Fri 7 am–4 pm. 525 Golden Gate Ave. at Polk, 415-431-4421.
Want to have some more coffee tawk? Join me on Tuesday May 28th at the Commonwealth Club, when I will be moderating a panel: The Perfect Cup: Coffee Talk With San Francisco’s Finest Roasters, with James Freeman (Blue Bottle), Eileen Hassi (Ritual), and Jeremy Tooker (Four Barrel). The event kicks off at 5 pm with a coffee cupping, and tickets are $15 for members, $25 general admission, and $10 for students. 595 Market St., 2nd Floor, at 2nd St., 415-597-6700.
