Looking for someplace new to try? Here’s your monthly reminder of five new spots that recently opened around town. Pace yourself.
The crazy-popular salad (and sandwich) shop in the Marina has opened a new location in the former Yabbie’s Coastal Kitchen on Polk. The space is much bigger and built for hanging out: There are 44 seats plus nine at the wine bar, where you can find local beers and wines (five reds, five whites) to go with your Barn BLT hot off the sandwich press. Hubba. Initial hours are Tue–Sun 11 am–8 pm, and will be adjusted as needed (Mondays will be added later). 2237 Polk St. at Vallejo, 415-655-9438.
Looking at the soothing monochromatic tones, natural modern/chic interior, and farm name-checked menu of this new Ferry Building outpost from the Boulettes Larder team, I can’t help but call it Bougie Bar. While it may look like a poster child for “Stuff White People Like,” of course the Cali cuisine from this experienced team is utterly delicious, including eight kinds of pizzas from the wood-burning oven, some mezze selections (three for $16), and the kinds of artful salads you wish you made for yourself more often. Lunch Tue–Sat 11 am–3 pm, and there’s a takeout counter 12 pm–2 pm. 1 Ferry Building Marketplace, 415-399-1155.
Don’t you wish you had some lamb scrumpets in your life? Well, you can, at this new restaurant and bar from Anna Weinberg and Jennifer Puccio (Marlowe, Park Tavern), partnering with Weinberg’s husband James Nicholas—it’s in the Viceroy Hotel Group’s new Hotel Zetta. The menu is very London-inspired brasserie meets gastropub, with items like a duck Scotch egg, Welsh rarebit soufflé, fish and chips, a rib-eye, and a variety of pies, like wild mushroom. The inviting Ken Fulk–designed space features a variety of rooms, from the Blue Bar (complete with a 27-seat zinc bar, a perfect location for your next G&T) to the dining room that will have you thinking of English fox hunts and pubs. Nightly 5:30 pm–11 pm (bar opens at 5 pm). 360 Jessie St. at 5th St., 415-321-6000.
Opening this week is the new Castro location of chef-owner Ruggero Gadaldi and Adriano Paganini’s former Polk Street mainstay. Pesce has moved into the 2223 Market restaurant space, and will serve its classic menu of Venetian-style cicchetti and cocktails, plus new additions like pizza (both full-size and mini), and there's an expanded wine list. Look for the opening any day now; brunch will launch in a couple weeks. 2223 Market St. at Sanchez, 415-928-8025.
Wise Sons Deli at the Contemporary Jewish Museum
Fans of the 24th Street location’s pastrami can now score it in a Reuben, plus their stellar matzo soup, and more at this new sandwich counter inside the Contemporary Jewish Museum in SoMa (take a look at the full menu here). Order at the counter and take a seat, but you’ll have to go through the museum’s security line to get in (admission not required). You can also order at the takeout window, and eat outside on the patio (bonus: You can come by the window for breakfast items during the week and De La Paz Coffee). Psssst, late for work and in a rush? You can call ahead for your pastrami-and-egg sandwich at the window. Hours are Fri–Tue 11 am–4 pm, Thu 1–4 pm (closed Wed), and the takeout window is open Mon–Fri 8 am–4 pm. 736 Mission St. at 3rd St., 415-655-7887.
