Looking for somewhere new to try? Here’s your monthly reminder of five new spots that recently opened around town. There are so many new openings this month, we could actually suggest 10 spots. Anyway, here you go.
Opening today in the Mission is this casual and cheerful spot from Michael Meadows, who has created a dynamic space that will feature the sandwiches of Pal’s Takeaway during the day (yay, now served with seating!), and in the evening, there will be savory small plates to pair with a variety of local wines on tap and beers. Look for pop-ups on Tuesday evenings as well. 3066 24th St. at Treat.
This is one of the bigger openings this month, a sophisticated robata restaurant that has opened in the former Cypress Club and Scott Howard space in Jackson Square. Chef Roman Petry’s modern Japanese-inspired menu covers seafood, prime steaks, local ingredients, some sushi, and more, while you’ll find Daniel Hyatt’s superlative cocktails downstairs in the bar. Open for lunch during the week (perfect for a biz lunch!), and dinner nightly. 801 Montgomery St. at Jackson.
The T-lish team is at it again, opening their latest location in North Beach. The spot pretty much has everything you need: full liquor (their margarita picante is such a winner), tasty tacos (and many more dishes, like their tuna tostadas), outdoor seating, continuous hours between lunch and dinner, groovy art from Paul Madonna, and they’re even welcoming to little kiddies. Done. 1548 Stockton St. at Union.
For the ultimate in pop-up restaurants, be sure to pay a visit to this New Zealand import from Auckland restaurateur Tony Stewart. You can come by for lunch or dinner, with multi-course meals by Kiwi chef Hayden McMillen. The contemporary cuisine features some NZ ingredients, like Silvers Fern Farm’s SILERE merino lamb and seafood. There’s also a bar in case you just want to check it out over a drink (or a MOA beer) and a bite. For a restaurant constructed in record time, it’s a stylish one, featuring many items crafted in New Zealand. Pier 29.
Michelle Polzine (previously the star pastry chef at Range) has softly opened her very charming solo project in Hayes Valley. The menu is Danube-inspired (think Budapest, Vienna, and Prague) and will be limited for a bit until things get fully ramped up, but for now you can indulge in plenty of items, like her stellar knishes (like, whoa), raspberry plum coffee cake, and ice cream (look for more savory goods in coming weeks). Blue Bottle espresso, check. And wait until you see the fab vintage design. Open Tue-Sun 10 am-6 pm for now. 198 Gough at Oak.
