If you think the only place for farmer’s market edibles is on your table, think again. Another destination for seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs? Your face. Cow Hollow’s Spa Radiance will be happy to slather you in locally-grown goodness from the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market in its new series of all-natural, Bar None facials.
Free of toxic ingredients, synthetic fragrances and parabens, the 30-minute mini treatments ($75) use spa-grade products from the organic skin care line Eminence alongside fresh fruits and vegetables from such purveyors as Dirty Girl Produce and Mendocino County’s Apple Farm.
Angelina Umansky, who co-owns the spa with mother Galina Rovner, was inspired to create the farmer’s market facials after whipping up at-home spa treatments for a recent girl’s getaway weekend with friends.
“Then I started bringing it in and using it on clients. Then I went into my grandmother’s recipe book,” explains Umansky, who turned to the at-home skin care remedies her grandmother and mother created using herbs and other natural ingredients in their native Russia.
Customized with seasonal ingredients according to client’s skin type, the facials rely on tomatoes for their skin-brightening and tightening effects, apples and honey to moisturize and a puree of pumpkin and orange to hydrate and flood the skin with Vitamin A, Vitamin C and beta-carotene (all great for fighting signs of environmental stress). Cucumbers soothe eye puffiness, while freshly-chopped herbs deliver aromas that we couldn’t stop marveling over when we stopped into the spa for a test-run treatment a few weeks back.
