Inside the Artists' Studio: Jane Rosen, the Natural

By

More than a decade ago, Jane Rosen traded her Manhattan loft for a 40-acre plot of land atop a hill in San Gregorio, in a belt of sunshine south of Half Moon Bay and just minutes from the ocean. Today, she waves a hand and says, “Sometimes I forget I did this.”

Since she bought the property, she has been consumed with creating art in a sanctuary-like space alive with horses, dogs, falcons, and foxes. This suits Rosen, who has taken to rendering the likenesses of animals.

Her love of nature permeates her studio, which is filled almost completely with drawings of myriad creatures, amplified by natural light pouring through massive skylights. Rosen is best known for her sculptures of birds carved out of concrete, glass, limestone, and marble. Each is presented on a pedestal outside with a vantage point to Rosen’s landscape.
