If you've been to the SF MOMA recently, you've probably come across JAQK Cellars' wines in the museum's groundbreaking How Wine Became Modern exhibit. The adulation is well-deserved, and it doesn't take a graduate of sommelier school to see why. You can taste their museum-worthy vino in their speakeasy-esque headquarters at 402 Jackson St. in San Francisco, and you might even want to bring a pack of cards to play poker with to match their cardshark-themed wines. Settle in for a bottle or two, or if you're a fickle drinker, get a wine flight that'll suit your tastebuds.
Co-founder Craig MacLean's been making wine for 25 years with some of the best wineries in Napa and once the wines hit your tongue, each blend's personality comes through loud and clear. The transition is seamless from your first sweet sip of Charmed, Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, to the last sip of deep High Roller Napa Valley Cab. Craig’s partners, Joel Templin and Katie Jain of Hatch Design, are graphic artists whose work makes the bottles pop, and brings the same flair and hip soul to the company that Craig brings to the juice.
If you want some fresh air, head up to the rooftop deck, which glows amidst city lights, and if you need something to munch on, order up some gourmet cheese, meat, fruit, bread and chocolate. And even though holiday parties are behind us, you can spice up a winter night by drinking wine with your crew in one of their private spaces-- JAQK will even bring in caterers to suit the bottles you're sipping on.
Packages begin at $35 per person and bottles range from $19 -$67.
