No doubt, plenty of you will be heading to Tahoe this upcoming long weekend. If you're heading towards North Lake, you're in luck because the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe will be party central during Memorial Day weekend when the area conducts its annual summer kickoff extravaganza, Opening Day at the Lake.
From Tahoe City to Meeks Bay, local businesses will be getting into celebration mood, with dining specials and musical acts to coincide with the official launch of the boating and summer season.
For those volunteers participating in the West Shore Clean Up Day on Friday, the festivities kick off with a complementary continental breakfast, courtesy of Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet.
Saturday marks an "Opening the Deck" party at Homewood's West Shore Cafe and Inn, which boasts the most boat buoys -- 30 -- on Big Blue. Also celebrating the arrival of summer with deck-opening parties are Sunnyside Resort in Tahoe City, Chambers Landing Bar & Restaurant and Meeks Bay Resort & Marina.
On Sunday, check out the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood, which will present the public opening of its new exhibit, Tahoe Twenties: A Story of Boats, Booze and Business. The exhibit features boats, clothing and cars from the 1920s as a well as the impact of Prohibition on Lake Tahoe's businesses and communities.
Other Opening Day festivities include a seaplane spash-in and barbecue at Obexer's General Store, an open house at the community center, guided museum tours and historic walking tours. A guide to all Opening Day at the Lake celebrations can be found at here.
