Listen Up: David Byrne, Wilco and Goh Nakamura

Usually we’re eager to boast a top-notch list of artists vying for your hard earned dollars and attention span on any given night of the week. However, while there’s still something to choose from every single night, the real battle begins on Saturday, where you have various two-day events pitted against each other. Here’s the scoop.

Carbon Leaf, The Independent, 6/23: Check out the veteran indie pop stars perform their perfected stage skills on tour for their new album Nothing Rhymes With Woman, the first in almost 2 years.

David Byrne, Greek Theater, 6/26: This Talking Heads legend is taking back to his old tricks, busy on the road and just finished curating an entire tent at Bonnaroo, Mr. Byrne shows no signs of stopping.

Cursive, Great American Music Hall, 6/27: A turbulent ride is the nice way of putting this band’s tumultuous relationship with itself. On and off hiatus since the ‘90s, their latest, Mama, I’m Swollen has old fans stirring with excitement.

US Air Guitar Championships, The Independent, 6/26-27: Maybe a complete joke taken entirely too far, maybe just some crazed wannabe musicians channeling their inner rock star. Who knows? Either way, the US Air Guitar Championships provides endless entertainment for all, including the contestants. Check out both nights for just $30.

Spectrum Music Festival, Regency Center, 6/26-27: Slotted at almost the exact same time as the US Air Guitar Championships, this festival is a two-night extravaganza transforming the Regency Center into a multi-stage “kaleidoscope of entertainment,” as Spectrum calls it. Enjoy the sounds of recent blow-ups, Phoenix alongside acts like Boys Noize, Major Lazer, Richie Panic and many others (mostly locals!).

Wilco, Greek Theatre, 6/27: Called the “line-up probably the closest to ideal I’ve ever been lucky enough to experience,” by front man Jeff Tweedy, this particular blend of musicians has been proving successful for the drama-ridden group. After the death of an ex-member, being dropped from a label, health problems etc., Wilco still refuses to die. They’ve been hopping around every festival making splashes with new material from their forthcoming album, Wilco (The Album) due out June 30th.

Vans Warped Tour, Pier 30/32, 6/27: If you feel you need to hang with a bunch of angsty, rebellious teenagers carrying their skateboards around (instead of riding them, of course) on a Saturday afternoon, hey, why not check out Vans Warped Tour? It’s an all day event featuring mostly ska and pop-punk, but it’s a good way to get your daily dose of Vitamin D out on the piers. Highlights include: 3OH!3, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Big D And The Kids Table, Guttermouth, Streetlight Manifesto, and The Ataris.

Goh Nakamura, Café Du Nord, 6/30: Relax after the busy weekend with this San Francisco-native singer/songwriter gaining fast fame with his songs about the DPT, little ditties about love and other precious topics. His charming voice and very likeable personality will win you over within the first 5 minutes, we promise.
