If you have a bone to pick with Jules Kim, the New York-based accessories designer more likely than not will happily oblige. That’s because the latest from Kim’s Bijules collection, beloved by no-last-name-needed celebrities from Beyonce to Kelis and Lady Gaga to Rihanna, is actually made using the tiny bones of animals collected during the designer’s escape-from-the-city adventure earlier this year to a friend’s 3,000-acre ranch outside Calistoga, Calif.
“I found all of these beautiful things that a city can’t provide,” says Kim, a self-described city girl who makes her first visit to San Francisco this weekend during a Saturday trunk show event with up-and-coming menswear designer B:Scott at Hayes Valley’s Azalea boutique.
The resulting 14k gold pieces molded from the shapes of mouse and bird bones are part of the new Scream and Spirit line from Bijules, best known for inventive approaches to modern accessories such as multi-finger bar rings and blinged-out nail rings designed to fit over fingertips and create the look of a long, bejeweled manicure. Beyonce loved the pieces so much that she donned an entire set ($36,000 worth) in her video Sweet Dreams.
Add to those now arguably iconic pieces and Kim’s latest foray into the world of bones futuristic accessories such as a pair of gold shoulder blades, and you’ve got a seriously diverse collection that nevertheless manages to maintain a cohesive aesthetic throughout.
“The common thread is that the designs seek to redefine jewelry definitions,” Kim tells us. “It’s creating a way to tweak the design and make the stories of each piece ironic and basically scoff, laugh and make fun of fashion and have a sense of humor about beauty.”
Want to scoff, laugh and make fun of fashion with Kim herself? She’ll be hanging out at Azalea tomorrow from 12-5 p.m. Adding a charitable twist, 10 percent of sales from Bijules and B:Scott during the event will benefit Kim’s non-profit of choice, Keep a Child Alive. An after party with the folks from B:Scott goes down at Otis from 9 p.m on. Hit up both events, and you’ll be eligible to win a giveaway worth $1,000 from both designers.
