The wait is over and we finally have a sparkling new Bay Bridge! If you haven't driven, walked, or biked over the newbie yet, our photos will give you a sneak peek of the marvel:
Photographer Michael Halberstadt has a rare relationship and history with the Bay Bridge. "I was on Treasure Island during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake," he told us. "I got a California Highway Patrol escort back into San Francisco on the lower deck (heading in the wrong direction). To take these photos, I got a CHP escort going toward Oakland on the upper deck of the old bridge. Few, if any, people could say that!"
Halberstadt received access to the closed sections on both the new and old Bay Bridge for the last three days before it reopened. We'll miss the old bucket of bolts that was the old Bay Bridge, but we can't deny we love its reincarnation. Looking forward to many trips over and back!
